HBO Max has given a straight-to-series order for Madeleine Miller’s international best-selling novel, Circe. Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver (Rise of the Apes, Jurassic World) will write and executive produce the Greek mythology-adaptation, with Chernin Entertainment and Endeavor Content. The season will run for eight episodes.
Sarah Aubrey, head of original content for HBO Max, says, “Circe’ tells an epic story of love, loss, tragedy and immortal conflict, all through the eyes of a fierce female lens. I’ve been a longtime fan of Rick and Amanda’s work and their ability to simultaneously build epic imaginative worlds while creating emotional dynamic characters. In partnership with Peter Chernin and Jenno Topping, we have the dream team to bring ‘Circe’ to life.”
Circe is a powerful, feminist modern take on the world of Greek mythology, told through the eyes of a nymph who. ultimately transforms into a formidable witch that is able to challenge monsters, gods, and titans. Miller paints the familiar figure from The Odyssey as a powerful, fearless goddess who turns men into pigs, but only because they deserved it.
Circe was Miller’s highly anticipated follow-up after The Song of Achilles, landing her #1 on the New York Times bestseller list for 16 weeks and selling over half a million books in the U.S. alone. It was shortlisted for the 2019 Women’s Prize for Fiction and the Winner of the 2019 Indie Choice Award. It currently has 4.3 rating on Goodreads.
