Artist Feature: Rebecca
Rebecca, aka _cloggedtoilet_ , is a fanartist who is obsessed with Lore Olympus. She works with traditional materials. When she’s not at work or painting, she’s either reading a book somewhere or hanging out with her cat :P
How long have you done art? What mediums have you tried?
I have been drawing for as long as I can remember. I was really into watercolor back in my high schools days. When I went to college I studied Fine Arts, my concentration was painting, drawing, and printmaking (it was all lumped together) so I really focused on oil painting. I did mostly realistic portraits and still do to this day. I also still do some printmaking, mostly lino prints. My *other* art instagram is @rebeccagappertart which is mostly my oil paintings.
How would you describe your style?
I try to go for that “fairy” vibe. I like to use a lot of white splatter in my work as much as I can and I feel like that just gives it that ~ethereal~ look to it.
I’ve been trying to explore styles and using some watercolors and even colored pencils!
Tell us your Lore Olympus story. What got you into Lore Olympus? What made you stay?
Okay! I actually saw an ad for Lore Olympus on Instagram, it was the panel from the beginning chapters where Persephone wakes up in the Underworld and she’s wandering around Hades’ house.
The style and colors had me hooked. I *immediately* downloaded the Webtoon app and read the entire LO comic that same day.
This was back in 2018 and I have been obsessed ever since!
If you could body snatch one LO character for a day, who would it be?
This might be a very unpopular opinion but I would have to go with Thetis. I think her character design is so unique and stunning. I LOVE the gray/white/teal watercolor effect she has.
Which Lore Olympus fan art are you most proud of and why?
It might honestly be my #LoreOlympusRedraw. I got the idea from @silverwillow99 who did the same Lore Olympus redraw.
I wanted to try out a new style and I couldn’t have been happier by the result! It was one of those ones where you aren’t sure at first, but it all comes together in the end.
I ended up using watercolor for the background/base layer. Then I used gouache for the more defined details, and just a touch of colored pencils for Persephone’s blush.
Any advice for someone looking to build their art skills?
It’s not just “talent” it’s about the PASSION. It’s not something that you gain over night, it takes time.
When you first start out don’t compare yourself to others. That’s honestly the hardest thing to get over. And once you start to realize that, your progress and how far you’ve come becomes everything.
I still keep all my sketchbooks from back in the day and it’s so cool to go back and look at how far my art has come :)
Also! Try different styles out. Dedicate a page or two in your sketchbook to studying different styles (ex. LO, Studio Ghibli, Disney) by learning other styles, you’ll realize what works for you and slowly develop your own style over time. There’s nothing wrong with using references!
Who did you get on our Hades' dog character quiz? And do you agree?
I got Big John! I would totally agree because I, too, need all the cuddles :)
