Background
Ares is the son of Zeus and Hera. He has a brash, bulldozer of a personality. Zeus often sends him away from Olympus to manage mortal wars. Ares enters the comic when Hera and Zeus argue on the roof, and he comes to his mother’s defense.
Appearance
Ares has blond, curly hair. His skin appears to be bronze, perhaps inspired by weapons in ancient Greece which were crafted from the same material. He appears in the comic with several injuries, later with an arm cast. He usually wears mortal realm military garb or a modern navy blue uniform, though at Aphrodite’s home, he wears a casual tank top and sweatpants.
Family
Ares is a transient being. While he isn’t often home, he appears to be devoted to his family and have good relationships with most of them.
Ares has an adversarial relationship with Zeus. From defending his mother to causing Zeus to flee from the kitchen at the sight of him to a physical confrontation on the front lawn, father and son do not get along.
On the other hand, Ares has a close relationship with his mother, Hera. He defends her when she and Zeus are in a heated argument, and she cuts his hair in the kitchen. Hera wrote his name in Persephone’s book of suitors (with three question marks). During a scuffle with his father, he accidentally elbows Hera in the face.
Hebe scribbles her name on his arm cast, a loving, familiar gesture.
Ares and his son Eros have a comically chaotic relationship. Eros jokes that he is a “disaster” and seems embarrassed by his wild father.
Relationships
aphrodite
Ares is in an open relationship with Aphrodite. He is the father of at least one of her children, Eros. Ares showed tenderness to Aphrodite when she revealed the truth of her sexual encounter with his father, Zeus, later staying over at her house in two separate scenes.
persephone
Ares meets Persephone in the Mortal Realm. She heals him after he is impaled on a tree, and he spends a week pretending he can’t read to get to know her. After they share a kiss, Kore sees his planner and realizes that he could read all along. She calls for her mother, and Demeter beats him with a pitchfork.
They later meet again in the Underworld where Ares tells Persephone that he could sense her anger all the way from the Mortal Realm. He is fascinated by her name change and potential for wrath. Ares appears to care about Persephone and later apologizes for inciting her anger and asks why she cried.
Skills & Abilities
Ares can sense declarations of war.
Ares can manipulate the anger in individuals (more powerful effect the younger they are).
When enraged, Ares becomes engulfed in flames and nearly impervious to harm.
